I ♡ makers

My very first writing job, back in the late 90s, was writing about Glasgow’s incredible design community for the Sunday Herald, and I’ve been driven by the same creative curiosity ever since.

Over the years I’ve written about food, fashion, art, music, architecture, travel, ceramics, theatre, jewellery, lingerie, dance, photography, millinery, menswear, and countless other creative endeavours and practitioners, interviewing everyone from Tom Ford to Theo Fennell.

And for the last 10 years I’ve been helping brands like John Lewis, Sotheby’s, EE and New Balance make their voices distinct and their content compelling.

But I am also, and have always been, an artist and craftsperson. I have illustrated a couple of books, sold my hats to Sienna Miller and Meg Mathews, spent decades drawing, painting and printmaking, dabbled in ceramics, and I now make fine jewellery from a bench off Hatton Garden.

Words for Makers is about combining everything I’ve learned in marketing and journalism with my lived experience of creative practice, to help independent makers and design-loving customers find one another.

Shot from above, the image shows Gemma at a slightly messy jewellery bench, crafting a piece of jewellery, with the same care she uses to craft brand writing.
